Alibi
About This Spot
Stepping into Alibi feels like slipping into a less polished, yet warmly familiar, corner of San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood. It’s that kind of laid-back neighborhood bar where the pace slows down just enough to catch up with friends or make a few new ones over a well-chosen beer or a simple cocktail. The open garage door invites a gentle breeze, blending the indoors with the outdoors and giving the space an easygoing vibe that echoes a casual gathering in a friend’s basement.
The mood here drifts between mellow daytime hangout and a quietly buzzing evening spot, where the jukebox hums softly beneath conversation and the occasional clack of billiard balls adds to the soundtrack. It’s not a place that clamors for attention or tries too hard — just a welcoming refuge where the regulars, the weekend visitors, and the curious find a moment to pause.
With a keen nod to classic bar comforts, Alibi balances a solid lineup of draft beers including recognizable favorites, along with a handful of cocktail lounge touches in drinks like the locally noted “I Need a Drink” or a refreshing cider. The bar’s straightforward offerings invite you to focus less on a meticulously crafted menu and more on the human moments unfolding around it — the stories exchanged over a Slurpee or the familiar clink of a Jack and Coke in hand.
The friendly buzz of chatter, the casual feel of dart boards and pool tables, and the occasional bright nugget of conversation with the bartenders all contribute to an atmosphere that’s neither pretentious nor forgettable. Alibi doesn’t outrun its dive bar roots; instead, it embraces them with an honest spirit, the kind that encourages you to unwind naturally, wherever you might find yourself on any given day.

Great place for billiards and average drinks with a good atmosphere. Outdoor and open garage air in the bar was cool, reminds me of going out to your friends basement in high school. Bartender was not the nicest about drink selection recommendations. Cash only, not sure why but would have some ideas. Will only come here again if other friends pick it as there’s better and more friendly neighborhood dive bars.

The Alibi is my go-to neighborhood bar. Chill vibe, a good jukebox, and a perfect spot to kick back and relax. I’m mostly into IPAs, and they have good ones like Stone Delicious and Space Dust on tap. I prefer coming during the day when it’s more laid-back, but even at night when it gets busier, the service is always solid. Friendly staff, cool regulars, and just an all-around good spot to hang. Definitely one of my favorites in San Diego.

I really love this place although I don't drink much. Everyone is really friendly and I got some great pool games in with the locals.

First time here. It’s your typical dive, don’t expect anymore, don’t expect any less. Quarter machine was out of order so could play some of the games we wanted to but the bartender was pretty nice which is always great when it comes to drive bars

I came here for the first time 2 years ago. During that first week, I met Jamie, Brian, Ron and Jason. Needless to say, I knew I would keep coming back every week. Cool vibes, great games, awesome staff and the owner Joe is cool every time I see him.

An oldie but goodie. They only accept cash, but they have an ATM inside. I like coming here to play pool and drink pear cider they have a few games to play, a long bar, a couple booths inside, and now an outside patio space. Not much to look at. This is where you bring old friends you actually like to hang out with.
